CASE STUDY: THE FORTUNUI

The Challenge:

Faced with a tight schedule, Upright had to ensure that scaffolding around the mast, mid and rear gantries of the ship Fortunui could handle the passage from wharf to dry dock.

The Detail:

The Korean-owned vessel needed water blasting, painting and electrical maintenance while in port in Lyttelton.

Key design components included adequate bracing and ties onto the steelwork so that the scaffold would safely withstand the trip across the harbor into dry dock. The structure was netted from the inside  to contain material from water blasting and clear drop zones were established with signage to maintain safe separation of scaffolders and crew.

With a mainly Korean language-speaking crew, effective communication was essential. The Crew needed to understand the scaffold purpose and design, as well as associated risks like any attempts to beneath the scaffolders.

This project was delivered and dismantled so that the Fortunui could meet its scheduled departure date.
